Welcome to the Fitchburg East Rotary Club web site. We are a civic organization dedicated to supporting the local community by providing funding and direct services to improve the lives of residents. Through members and other volunteers; the club supports literacy, children at risk, anti-hunger programs, and scholarships for local high schools graduates. Additionally, the club is participating in a district wide project which includes building a Habitat for Humanity house in our own backyard. The club also takes pride in decorating the downtown with flower planting and care throughout the growing seasons.
Fitchburg East Charter held its first meeting 27 years ago on February 14th, 1981. There were 34 members present that evening as Mr. Rocco Piccicuto, a local Barber, presided over the meeting as club President
Since then, Fitchburg East Rotary Club has helped the community by performing good deeds, helping the elderly and less fortunate families, giving charitable contributions to local charities, providing high school students educational scholarships for college, and much more.
Some of the first few projects that the club performed included building a gazebo at Stanley Park in West Fitchburg, painting and revitalizing a gazebo on Main Street, and removing graffiti on an exterior wall at the Stewarts Department store. These structures remain visual in the community today.
Today, the club continues to experience growth in memberships and projects. It has developed from a long male bastion into a diversified membership that breathes new life and enthusiasm into the clubs life line. Some of our youngest members, namely past presidents Mrs. Tarrnum Williams and Mr. Mark Williams, were named 2007 Rotarian's of the Year for District 7910.
Our members thrive on understanding club history from Charter Members William Oksanan, Edward Howard Sr., and Dr. Malcolm Price. It enables our club to enhance development plans for ongoing and future projects, which in turn raises our funding, therefore allowing us to improve service for our community needs.
One of the projects that we continue today is beautifying Fitchburg by displaying flower boxes with advertisements of local business companies on them. This increases our visibility of local businesses, along with raising funds for our club. Another project that we do is the Spaghetti Dinner which raises funding for the Police Athletic League (PAL), which helps youth at risk and organizations such as Habitat of Humanity. An additional project that we do is the Super Bowl Brunch, which benefits community projects and local charities. Every December, we "ring the bell" for the Salvation Army, and always have been one of the strongest civic organizations in that endeavor. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday, our Family at Needs Program focuses on our efforts to serve less fortunate families and community agencies by providing food, clothing, transportation, and gifts. We also have a scholarship program that disburses over $6,000 every year for students entering or attending institutions of higher learning. We also sponsor the Interact Club of high school students, and the Retract Club of college students. Both of these programs serve to expose our youth to areas in which they can learn examples of the many advantages brought to the community as exemplified by Rotary Clubs.
Our contribution and service to the local community remains powerful, and our club will always be active in many ongoing charitable and educational programs, as long as our Rotary members believe that anything is possible.
