Announcements:

  • President Mark brought us up-to-date on the Habitat Project. The house is now framed - the roof is on and windows and doors are in. A plumber is working on the site presently. Our club has not only made major donations to the project but also raised $37,000.00 with in-kind donations.
  • Terry O'Callaghan will be at the meeting next week to discuss the Flower Box Project.
  • REMINDER; The Rotary International District 7910 and Habitat for Humanity Gala scheduled for Monday, April 14 HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
  • Host families are still being sought for two male members of the GSE Team from Turkey who will be in the area April 17 - April 20. Help will also be required in transporting members of the team. Please refer to the e-mail sent by Gwen O'Neil, which outlines the itinerary during their stay. Gwen is looking for assistance to make this a memorable experience for the visitors.
  • Please note the date change...The First Annual Teachers Celebration & Recognition Dinner will now take place on May 13 at the Best Western Royal Plaza, 150 Royal Plaza Drive, Fitchburg. $35.00 per ticket/$350.00 table of 10. Bob Campbell reiterated that everyone in the club needs to lend a hand to make the evening a success. He requested that each member donate a basket for the raffle and a sign-up list was subsequently distributed. Bob will make up an agenda of duties for each member which will be available at our meeting next week.
  • The District Conference will take place on Friday May 2, Saturday May 3, and Sunday May 4, at the Holiday Inn Boxborough Woods. DG Greg will host a hospitality suite on Friday and Saturday and would like our club to participate on those two days.
  • Please note that our meeting on Tuesday, April 22 will be held at the Singapore Restaurant NOT at Slattery’s.

History of Rotary: Carol Schwarzer continued this week with the History of the Four-Way Test. In 1932, with the economy in shambles, Herbert Taylor the owner of the Club Aluminum Company wrote down on paper a code that he asked his employees to live by, and which he hoped would ultimately increase his sales. In 1943 those words - The Four-Way Test - were adopted by Rotary. Charles Walgreen, in 1955, began to use those same words in his drug stores. The Four-Way Test had become a model for business ethics.

We have yet another stand-up comic in our midst. This week an amusing joke about "Lord & Taylor" was told by Herb Pratt.

Attendance:

17 Fitchburg East Rotarians
2 Guests: Susan Campbell and Sue Nagle

Birthdays/Anniversaries: We sang a couple of birthday ditties to Joyce Campbell and Bud Fortin who both celebrate this week. "Happy Birthday" to Joyce and Bud.

Raffle: Rich Duncan had the ticket - again - but had to be content with finding the Ace and not the Joker.

A discussion ensued regarding whether or not the club should contribute for members to attend the Superintendent's Dinner at Monty Tech. Various options were put forward before it was decided that this topic should be discussed further at the Board Meeting.
